The Gunjur Immigration Post came under attack on Tuesday night after an angry mob vandalised the facility while protesting the arrest of three suspected drug peddlers by officers of the Drug Law Enforcement Agency (DLEAG).

The incident occurred at around 8:00pm on January 27, 2026, when youths in Gunjur stormed the immigration post, which also hosts DLEAG personnel, shortly after the suspects had been transported to Kotu by field operatives.

Although the arrested suspects were no longer at the post, the protesters turned their anger on the facility, pelting the complex with stones and causing damage to the roof, office doors and windows.

Authorities confirmed that no immigration or DLEAG personnel were injured during the attack.

Security sources said the mob action appeared to be driven by demands for the immediate release of the suspects, whom they believed were being held at the post.

In swift response, officers of the Gambia Immigration Department (GID) and DLEAG launched a joint operation in the area, leading to the arrest of about 20 suspects believed to be linked to the vandalism.

The detained individuals are currently undergoing screening and will be handed over to the Gambia Police Force for further investigation and possible prosecution.

In a strong statement following the incident, the GID condemned the attack, describing it as an act of lawlessness that poses a serious and life-threatening risk to security personnel deployed to protect communities.

The department urged citizens to exercise restraint, respect the rule of law, and support security agencies in their work, warning that attacks on government facilities undermine public safety and trust.
