A new song by Gambian artists Oboy and Gambian Child has sparked strong reactions from supporters of the United Democratic Party (UDP).

The track, Hadumo, which translates as “greedy,” appears to reference the party’s internal conflict that led Talib Bensouda and several members to leave while party leader Ousainou Darboe remained in charge.

Following its release, the song attracted criticism on social media, with many UDP supporters calling it disrespectful. Some urged others to unfollow the artists’ accounts.

At the same time, other Gambians, including supporters of the ruling National People’s Party, defended the musicians, praising their creativity and lyrical skill.

Oboy and Gambian Child previously sparked debate in 2021 with their song Ajindi, which suggested that leaders unable to perform their duties should be removed from office.

The artists are currently preparing for their first European tour, but some have advised them to focus on entertainment rather than politics.

Oboy’s wife, Salimatou Fatty, defended the singer, saying he was merely expressing himself through art and had committed no offence.

The controversy highlights the sensitive nature of politics in the Gambia and the impact music can have in shaping public opinion, even as the young artists continue to gain popularity at home and abroad.
