The circulation of a photo believed to be of the alleged killer of teacher and youth leader Yunusa Mbye has intensified public reaction to his tragic death in Fajara, with renewed calls for swift justice and stronger action against violent crime in The Gambia.

Mbye, a well-known educationist and youth leader from Bansang, was allegedly stabbed multiple times during an incident that has shocked the nation.

Police have since arrested a suspect identified as Momodou Ba, a Guinean national, who remains in custody as investigations continue.

Following the emergence of the suspect’s mugshot online, social media platforms have been flooded with comments expressing grief, anger, and demands for accountability, with many Gambians describing the killing as “senseless and heartbreaking.”

Among those reacting, Ousman Jarsey issued a strongly worded statement calling for expedited justice.

“We do not only want him arraigned; we want an expedited trial,” Jarsey said. “We reject any claim that he has mental health issues. That is a stupid explanation that many murderers invoke as a defence to evade responsibility. People circulating that narrative should stop.”

He further alleged that the suspect had a history of violent behaviour, claiming: “This man has an antecedent history of being a deliberate and serial stabber,” though authorities have not confirmed such claims.

Jarsey described Mbye’s death as a “lifelong tragedy and regret,” adding that the loss of a “productive and promising young man” was both “immense and irreparable,” while insisting that justice must be served without delay.

Other Gambians online also echoed similar sentiments, urging authorities to strengthen the justice system and ensure that violent offenders are swiftly prosecuted to prevent further loss of life.

The killing has reignited wider public debate on rising violent crime, with citizens calling for improved policing, stronger deterrents, and faster judicial processes in murder cases.

As investigations continue, Yunusa Mbye is being remembered as a committed educator and youth advocate whose life was cut short, leaving behind shock, grief, and growing demands for justice across the country.
