The Gambia Police Force has refuted claims circulating on social media suggesting an elderly man committed murder in Old Jeshwang.

A video shared widely on Tuesday morning shows a man being escorted by a crowd, with posts alleging he was involved in a fatal stabbing.

But police said the incident was not a murder.

In a statement issued Tuesday, police clarified that the case is a reported assault causing actual bodily harm involving a knife, which occurred on Monday, August 4.

The victim, identified as Samba Jallow, sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Kanifing General Hospital.

The alleged assailant, 50-year-old marabout Saidou Trawally of Old Jeshwang, is in custody and cooperating with investigators.

Police have urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation and to support the investigation by sharing credible information.
