Police have opened an investigation into Sunday’s violent land dispute between Waliba Kunda and Perai Tenda in the Upper River Region.

Footage emerged on social media showing youths of the two villages armed with machetes, axes, sticks and cutlass in a bush land which resulted in dozens injured as violence broke.

But police were quickly deployed to the area to maintain peace and stability.

Police spokesman Lamin Njie told Gambiana: “There were some damages and injuries and that also happened during the clashes and we are currently monitoring the situation down there to maintain the peace.

“We have also opened an investigation and the investigation is working on the level of damages and injured people.”

Upper River Region has been a centre of communal violence since the change of government in 2017.
