The Gambia Police Force has cautioned against any unauthorised protests or assemblies, warning that participants will face the “full force of the law.”
In a statement issued Tuesday, police said they had received permit requests from the civil society group Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA) less than 24 hours before its planned demonstrations. The group has vowed to hold three consecutive days of protests with or without approval, over the controversial removal of Auditor General Modou Ceesay.
Police said the requests are still undergoing the usual screening process but stressed that no protest can be staged until official clearance is granted under the Public Order Act.
“Any unlawful protest, assembly, or attempt to occupy public spaces without approval will not be tolerated,” the statement warned, adding that organizers and participants would be held personally accountable for any threat to national peace, security, or public order.
The force also noted that the Auditor General dispute is now before the courts and should proceed “without interference.” It urged concerned groups to pursue constructive dialogue with authorities instead of public demonstrations.
Despite the warning, the GPF reassured the public that there is no cause for alarm and encouraged people to go about their normal activities.
“The Gambia Police Force reaffirms its zero-tolerance stance on lawlessness and warns that acts of incitement, disorder, or defiance of the law will not be entertained,” the statement concluded.
