President Adama Barrow has made an unannounced visit to the family of ex-president Yahya Jammeh in Kanilai.

Mr Barrow made the visit on Thursday while en route to the Upper River Region.

He met the Jammeh family behind closed doors and no statement was issued after the meeting.

President Barrow recently signed coalition agreement with former president Jammeh’s APRC party as he seeks a second term in office.

He is relying on the support of the former president in the Fonis to win the hotly contested presidential election in December.

However his visit to Kanilai was condemned by many including victims and activists who described it as “a slap in the face”.

”The president is making a mockery of the transitional justice system and protecting potential violators,” said Gambian activist Pa Samba Jaw.

Another activist said the visit is an indication of the Barrow government to protect Jammeh from facing justice.

However supporters of the president welcomed the visit calling it an act of reconciliation.
