Sainey Jawara, National Assembly Member for Lower Saloum, has apologised to the Mandinka and Lebanese communities over remarks he recently made, saying he deeply regrets his words and takes full responsibility for them.
In an apology statement, Jawara said he was sorry to everyone who had been offended or hurt by his remarks.
“I deeply regret the words I used. They were inappropriate, and I take full responsibility for them,” Jawara said.
He acknowledged that public figures have a responsibility to consider the consequences of their words, saying he regretted any pain, disappointment or offence his remarks may have caused.
“There is no excuse for what I said,” he said, adding that acknowledging mistakes and learning from them was part of becoming better individuals and leaders.
Jawara said he had reflected seriously on the matter and regretted allowing his emotions at the time to influence his words.
He also reaffirmed his respect for communities living in The Gambia and said he remained committed to promoting peace, unity, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
“To everyone I have offended, I humbly ask for your forgiveness,” he said.
Jawara acknowledged that he could not take back the words he had used but said he would learn from the experience and be more responsible and mindful of his words and actions in the future.
“Once again, I am truly sorry. I sincerely regret my remarks, and I hope that, with time, those who were hurt will find it in their hearts to forgive me,” he said.
