Gambian international Youssoupha Sanyang scored his first-ever professional goal on Sunday as SK Slavia Prague secured a dramatic 5-3 victory over Viktoria Plzen in the Czech First League.
The young forward timed his run perfectly in the 27th minute to receive a pass from Lukas Provod and slot the ball home for the breakthrough goal.
The win helps Slavia maintain their position at the top of the league standings.
Despite his progress, Sanyang was left out of Gambia’s squad for the November friendly against Kuwait.
Head coach Jonathan McKinstry explained the situation during his questions and answers session organised by the Sports Journalists’ Association of The Gambia (SJAG) held at Seaview Hotel on Saturday, 8th November.
“I am not sure if people are aware of this, you guys get to see the squad if Baboucarr and his team release it. We actually have to, not that we choose to, we have to send the invites about 12 days before that. So, the invites through FIFA, you have to send the invites two weeks before the window opens.
“If you send it one week and five days before the window opens, the club can say no and that stage when we name the squad, Youssoupha have played only three minutes of first team football.”
The Scorpions head coach was, however, was full of praise for the young attacker’s recent performances and development.
“We are super happy for Youssoupha this last week. Like everyone, everyone was watching him play and just saw the Champions League but even the weekend getting his first start of the league season in that weekend. This week has been a great week.”
