The Gambia women’s national football team has been eliminated in the WAFU Zone A football championship semifinal match against host nation Cape Verde amid accusation of referee bias.

The Scorpions put up a fearless display against their opponents and came back from a goal down through the sensational goal poacher Catherine Jatta’s 66th minute spot kick after substitute Kaddy Jarju was fouled in the box.

However, the Scorpions were left irked as they complained a two-strong penalty claims ignored by the central referee.

Meanwhile, Scorpions head coach Mariama Sowe told a post-match interview that playing against the host side isn’t easy.

“But I think the referee also contributed to our defeat. We had two clear handballs, and if they were given it would’ve been a different game,” she said.

Now the Scorpions will face either Senegal or Guinea Bissau in Sunday’s 3rd place play offs.
