Senegal’s constitutional court has ruled against President Macky Sall’s decree to postpone poll and uphold the February 25 elections date.

The constitutional ruling followed Macky Sall’s dramatic postponement of the elections plunging the country into mass demonstration which left at least three people dead and several injured.

In its ruling, the Constitutional Council of Senegal invalidated the law that postponed the presidential election scheduled for February 25, 2024.

“This decision revealed during the session on February 5, 2024, was made after thorough deliberation by the 7 Sages (judges).

“The Constitutional Council emphasised that this law was contrary to the country’s Constitution. Consequently, the decree repealing the decree convening the electoral body for the presidential election on February 25, 2024, was annulled. This decision has significant implications for the ongoing electoral process,” it said.
