Senegal’s prison service has seen a shake-up after a serial jailbreaker, known as the “Boy Djiné”, broke free again on Saturday night.

Baye Modou Fall, 32, who is still on the run, has reportedly already escaped from jail around 10 times.

Mr Fall told local TV that he had escaped because he was in pre-trial detention after being denied bail and the legal process was taking too long.

“I decided to take matters into my own hands,” the AFP news agency quotes him as saying.

He broke through a ventilation grill in his cell and then escaped over the wall of the jail in the capital, Dakar.

“I always knew that I could get out of the prison at any time, night or day.”

But Mr Fall assured viewers he would show up for his hearing when a date had been arranged.

An investigation into the escape is under way – and the head of the implicated prison has been transferred.
