The Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment has confirmed that 10 containers of edible cooking oil were imported by Niro Company Limited amid rising food prices.

The ministry says it will “continue to remain committed to ensure that essential commodities are accessible and affordable by the general public especially during these trying times of price hikes of essential commodities as result of Covid 19 pandemic.”

It added that The Gambia government has negotiated and signed a Bilateral Trade Agreement with the Republic of Sierra Leone in December 2021. 

“The main objective of the agreement is to increase the supply of the essential commodities especially edible oil with a view of stabilising the prices at the domestic market.

“Under this agreement Niro Company Ltd has imported 10 containers of edible cooking oil. These qualities are currently available in stock with the company in its sale points at Sukuta and Kairaba Avenue ,” it said.

The ministry confirmed that a gallon of 20 litres of cooking oil will cost D1,955.
