The Gambia’s Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission has found former President Yahya Jammeh and his ex-health minister Dr Tamsir Mbowe criminally responsible for the deaths of 41 HIV/AIDS patients.

“Yahya Jammeh and Dr. Tamsir Mbowe are responsible for the deaths of 41 HIV/AIDS patients who died as a result of their fake treatment programme,” the report finding said.

“They are also responsible for the sexual violence committed against the victims which was part and parcel of the treatments administered,” it added.

Dr Tamsir Mbowe, former health minister and medical doctor, has told the TRRC that ex-president Yahya Jammeh “cured” HIV/AIDS.

The former health minister was in charge of Jammeh’s controversial alternative treatment programme and ran the day-to-day affairs of the centre.

Jammeh surpried the world in 2007 after he claimed to have find the cure for HIV/AIDS.
