Mohammed B.S. Jallow, the Vice President, speaking on behalf of President Adama Barrow, has reaffirmed The Gambia’s commitment to press freedom, youth empowerment and ethical sports journalism at the opening of the 8th AIPS Africa Congress in Banjul.

Addressing delegates at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre, the Vice President said, “Our nation remains firmly committed to democratic governance, press freedom, regional solidarity, and youth empowerment through sports and culture.”

Mohammed B.S. Jallow, highlighted the importance of sports journalism in shaping Africa’s image, noting that “the story of African sports cannot be told without you, the journalists,” whom he described as “the bridge between the sweat of the athlete and the cheers of the fan.”

On the evolving media landscape, the Vice President stressed the need for professionalism, adding that “the digital age has transformed the way we tell stories, and with artificial intelligence reshaping media landscapes, ethical journalism becomes more important than ever.”

The congress, which also featured the unveiling of the new AIPS Africa logo, brings together sports journalists from across the continent to deliberate on digital media, AI, and ethical sports journalism in Africa.
