Police on Monday arrested a 30-year-old woman from Lamin Kerewan for beating up her 8-year-old niece.

The incident sparked outrage on social media after the video of Adama Jarju mercilessly beating the child with a wooden pestle went viral.

Adama told police that she lost her temper and started punishing the girl when she failed to carry out assigned household chores.

“The Gambia Police Force through its Gender and Child Protection Unit strongly advise parents to desist from the abuse and maltreatment of children as there is zero tolerance for such a behaviour.

“Individuals found wanting will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” the police said.
