Street vendor Ousman Darboe was alleged to have died in police custody

The Gambia Police have denied involvement in the death of Ousman Darboe, a street vendor.

Mr Darboe lost his life on Wednesday morning after an incident allegedly involving the police.

Reports on social media alleged that he died at the hands of the Police.

But speaking to the Police spokesman, ASP Lamin Njie said denied that the police were involved in his death.

“What we know is that he is dead but he didn’t die in our custody,” said the police spokesman.

He said the deceased was one time arrested and released on bail.

According to the police spokesman, they received report that the deceased was an Asthma patient who fell down while riding a bicycle after an Asthma attacked.

He added that “I don’t know where he died exactly….I don’t know whether this is true, it is not from any official source that he was riding a bicycle.”

Meanwhile, angry mob are reported to have attacked the home of the anti – crime unit boss Gorgi Mboob.

ASP Lamin Njie said: ” some people went to the house of Gorgi Mboob and vandalised the place and even looted the house.”

“I think they even set fire in the veranda – the whole house is not set ablaze.”
