Gianni Merlo, the president of the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), has described the recently concluded AIPS Africa Congress in Banjul as a “resounding success,” praising the organisation and leadership of the Sports Journalists Association of The Gambia (SJAG).

In a letter dated February 11, 2026, from Lausanne, addressed to SJAG President Omar Jarju, Merlo commended the overall planning and execution of the congress held from February 6 to 9.

“I am happy to confirm that the AIPS Africa Congress, which you organised in Banjul from February 6th to 9th, was truly a resounding success,” Merlo wrote.

The AIPS Global President highlighted the quality of the venue and logistics, noting that “the Congress venue proved elegant and functional, and the organizational structure was flawless,” adding that the event has set a benchmark for future AIPS Africa assemblies.

Merlo also acknowledged the role of the Gambian government, stating that its support was “crucial to achieving this great success,” and praised SJAG’s ability to manage what he described as “a highly significant yet delicate event with great professionalism.”

According to the AIPS President, the Banjul congress has created an important legacy for the continent. “You will also serve as an example for future AIPS Africa Congress venues,” he said.

Gianni Merlo, concluded by thanking the organisers for the opportunity to experience The Gambia, describing the visit as memorable.

The 8th AIPS Africa Congress, hosted by SJAG at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre, brought together sports journalists and stakeholders from across Africa and beyond, and has been widely regarded as one of the most successful editions in the organisation’s history.
