President Adama Barrow has acknowledged that despite progress made in recent years, The Gambia continues to face major challenges, including youth unemployment, rising cost of living, climate shocks and global economic uncertainty.
Speaking during the country’s 61st Independence anniversary celebrations, Barrow said independence must not only be celebrated as a historical achievement but treated as a continuing responsibility that requires discipline, unity and national sacrifice.
He said the pressures facing the country show that nation-building is an ongoing journey, not a destination, and urged Gambians to remain resilient in the face of hardship.

The president called for unity, stressing that national development cannot be achieved if citizens allow politics, ethnicity or regional differences to weaken social cohesion.
According to him, the National Development Plan, YIRIWA, remains the government’s blueprint for economic transformation, social inclusion and improved livelihoods.
Barrow said resilience must be grounded in planning and collective effort, noting that the country can only overcome its difficulties through national cohesion and shared purpose.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to integrity in governance, stating that independence requires accountability and efficiency in public service.
