President Adama Barrow has appealed to his predecessor Yahya Jammeh to refrain from making divisive statements as the country heads to the polls on Saturday.

Speaking in Faji Kunda, Barrow said: “I want [Yahya] Jammeh to wish for peace for the country. We may have different ideologies but the country belongs to all of us and all of us have equal rights in the country.

“Therefore, I am appealing to president Jammeh to let him speak peace and let him talk about what will develop The Gambia.”

President Barrow also said that Jammeh “cried and begged for the corpse of his mother to be brought and buried in The Gambia,” adding he accepted his plea “because the country is for Gambians”.

“All these things that he is doing. I have nothing against Yahya Jammeh. This is why I don’t get angry over whatever he says. But The Gambia is our country and we have to promote peace,” he added.
