President Adama Barrow has announced plans to construct a bridge linking Barra to Banjul, as he commissioned the new Green Barra Ferry in the North Bank Region.
Speaking at the ceremony, the president said his government remains committed to improving transport infrastructure, assuring residents that the ferry project is only part of a broader development agenda.

“The new Barra ferry is here and I will add another ferry which will be named after Banjul,” he said.
He went further to promise a long-anticipated bridge between the North Bank and the capital.
“I want to tell the people of the North Bank that I will not just stop at providing ferries, but I will build a bridge between Barra and Banjul,” President Barrow declared.
The president cited his government’s track record in infrastructure development, referencing bridges constructed in parts of the country, including Farafenni.

“Nobody thought there would be a bridge in Farafenni and other places, but now they all have,” he said.
President Barrow also used the occasion to respond to critics who had previously questioned his government’s performance, particularly during challenges faced by the ferry system.
“Someone said since The Gambia was born that the Barrow government failed. But the way these people think is myopic, despite the peace, salary increment and affordable electricity,” he said.
He defended his leadership, emphasising what he described as a record of peace and development.
“In this country, I have not killed anyone, I have not jailed anyone, and I didn’t disturb anyone. All I do is work and bring development to the people,” he added.
The commissioning of the new ferry is expected to ease transportation challenges between Barra and Banjul, a key route for commuters and trade.
