President Adama Barrow has sworn in Martin Hackett as The Gambia’s Special Prosecutor in a ceremony held at State House in Banjul, marking a major step in the country’s transitional justice process.
Speaking at the ceremony, President Barrow said the appointment reflects the government’s commitment to justice, accountability, and the rule of law.

“We are restoring truth in our institutions and ensuring that heartless crimes and violations of human rights are never repeated,” the president said.
Barrow stated that the Office of the Special Prosecutor will independently investigate crimes referred for prosecution and ensure justice for victims.
In his remarks, Hackett described the appointment as a historic responsibility and assured victims and survivors that they have not been forgotten.

“The Gambia’s pursuit of justice stands as an important example to the region and the international community,” he said, pledging to carry out his mandate with independence and integrity.
