Vice President, Ousainou Darboe

The Gambia government spokesman, Ebrima G. Sankareh, has denied rumours that vice president, Ousainou Darboe, has been sacked.

Sankareh said the rumours were false and untrue adding that they were being peddled by detractors who wanted to created confusion in the corridors of power.

“As far as I am aware and per the veracity of the Presidency, Mr. Darboe remains our legally appointed Vice President and he is busy serving his nation.”

Rumours and conjectures have been circulating on social media since the political falling out of President Barrow and his former mentor and godfather, Ousainou Darboe.

President Barrow and Ousainou Darboe have been engaging in a game of political chess since Barrow declared his intention of seeking a second term. Darboe,  the leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), also harbours presidential ambition and sees Barrow as a barrier to achieving that dream.

The UDP sees President Barrow and his youth movement as an existential threat in their bid to form the next government in 2021.

Political pundits believe that it is a matter of when not if  the vice president will be sacked.
