Tensions between Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko have prompted a flurry of behind-the-scenes mediation efforts aimed at preventing a political fallout at the heart of government.

According to Les Échos, discreet meetings between the two leaders were held over the weekend, involving senior mediators working late into the night to bridge growing differences. While the nature of the dispute remains undisclosed, the talks underscore rising concerns over internal divisions within the ruling leadership.

National Assembly President El Malick Ndiaye is reportedly leading the mediation efforts. He is said to have cut short an official visit to France and returned to Dakar on Sunday, cancelling a planned engagement with supporters of the PASTEF party.

Though no official statements have been released, the sudden diplomatic activity signals a coordinated attempt to restore unity between Diomaye and Sonko—longtime allies whose partnership has been central to Senegal’s recent political transformation.

Observers say maintaining cohesion within the executive is crucial as the government faces mounting public expectations for reform and stability.
