A man has been charged with reckless driving after a car drifting stunt at Abuko Upper Basic School school left a 12-year-old boy seriously injured.

Malick Badjie appeared before Bundung Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, where he pleaded guilty to a charge of reckless and negligent act under the Criminal Offence Act.

The charge follows a shocking incident at Abuko School last week in which Badjie was seen drifting his vehicle in the school compound before hitting Grade 6 pupil Abdourahman Bah.

The child sustained serious injuries to his legs and underwent emergency surgery. While early fears suggested possible amputation, doctors have confirmed that Abdourahman is recovering and responding well to treatment.

Magistrate Dibba adjourned the case until Thursday, 24 July, to allow the court to review the victim’s medical report ahead of sentencing.

Badjie has been remanded at Mile 2 Central Prisons until the next hearing.

In a statement, the Gambia Police Force (GPF) condemned the act and reiterated its “zero-tolerance” policy toward reckless driving, especially in school zones.

“Such acts pose grave risks to lives and public safety, and the GPF remains resolute in ensuring that offenders face the full weight of the law,” the statement read.
