European Union Ambassador to The Gambia Atila Lajos has been advised to stop meddling in the country’s internal affairs.

Lamin Chamang Komma, a US-based Gambian civil society leader, issued the warning to Ambassador Lajos amid a storm of controversy following Mr Lajos calls for gay rights in the country.

Mr Komma has joined thousands of Gambians both home and abroad who have taken to social media and local radio stations to strongly condemned gay rights in The Gambia.

They described the practice as “ungodly and evil which doesn’t go in line with religious morality and practice of the country”.

“Why are we not talking about segregation of Muslims in the West? Why are Muslims restricted in the way they practice their religion in the West?,” Mr Komma said.

“These are questions that every genuine Muslim should ask. We expect the EU Ambassador to have the same respect for our religious and cultural beliefs.”

“Constitutions are written based on countries’ cultures and norms. Therefore, this inhumane behaviour is not part of our culture and we say no to it,” he added.

Mr Komma however urged the National Human Rights Commission to focus on issues of human rights that “matters most to the Gambian people and refrain from calling for the protection of gay rights”.
