Heavy rainfall left parts of Banjul under floodwater on Tuesday, with several streets inundated as the downpour overwhelmed sections of the capital.

Videos shared by Banjul Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe on her official social media page showed large volumes of water covering Perseverance Street, making movement difficult and highlighting the city’s recurring flooding challenges during the rainy season.

Posting the footage, the mayor renewed her appeal for greater investment in the capital, writing: “Perseverance Street right now! This is exactly what I meant when I say ‘Justice for Banjul.”

The flooding comes as residents of the capital continue to face seasonal inundation whenever heavy rains fall, raising concerns over drainage infrastructure and the city’s vulnerability to extreme weather.

While the full extent of the flooding and any resulting damage was not immediately clear, the videos showed water stretching across the roadway, with parts of the area appearing submerged.

Mayor Lowe has repeatedly called for increased government support to address Banjul’s infrastructure needs, arguing that the capital deserves greater investment to tackle persistent flooding and improve living conditions for residents.
