Former Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) National Assembly member Omar Ceesay has announced his decision to join the UNITE Party led by Talib Ahmed Bensouda, days after resigning from the GDC over its alliance with the ruling National People’s Party (NPP).

In a statement issued on Thursday, Ceesay said the decision followed extensive consultations and careful reflection with his team, adding that he would provide further details in due course.

“After careful reflection, consultation, and consideration with my team, we have unanimously decided, with full conviction, to join the UNITE Party under the leadership of Talib Ahmed Bensouda.

“This decision was made in the best interest of the greater good.

“Thank you for your kind attention. I will provide more details about my decision later,” he said.

Ceesay resigned from the GDC shortly after the party formalised a political alliance with President Adama Barrow’s National People’s Party ahead of the December presidential election.

The alliance, described as one of the biggest political developments ahead of the polls, was sealed last week at the State House, where GDC leader Mama Kandeh and President Barrow signed the agreement during a ceremony attended by senior officials and supporters from both parties.
