The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) has said that no substantive evidence has yet been established against former Chief of Defence Staff, Mamat O.A. Cham, following allegations made by his former Personal Assistant, Ex-Sergeant Saine Modou.
In a statement issued on Monday, the military confirmed that it is aware of the allegations circulating on social media and acknowledged that the controversy resulted in the resignation of the former army chief.
However, GAF stressed that the allegations remain under investigation and should not be treated as established facts.
“The information currently circulating on various social media platforms resulted in the resignation of Lieutenant General (Rtd) Mamat O.A. Cham as CDS of the GAF.
However, it is important to indicate that no substantive evidence is yet to be established in relation to those matters,” the statement said.
The Armed Forces disclosed that President and Commander-in-Chief, Adama Barrow, has directed the establishment of an independent Board of Inquiry to investigate the allegations.
According to GAF, the inquiry is intended to ensure accountability, preserve public confidence in the institution, and establish the facts surrounding the matter.
The military said it would allow the Board of Inquiry to carry out a thorough, impartial and comprehensive investigation without interference.
While the investigation is ongoing, GAF maintained that its command structure and operational effectiveness remain intact.
“At this time, there is no situation arising from the matter in question that undermines operational effectiveness, command cohesion, or the routine functioning of the High Command,” the statement added.
The Armed Forces also reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, discipline and constitutional governance, while urging members of the public to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.
