The Gambia’s ministry of health has adversely warned women against using the sex stimulant substance locally known as ‘tabaa’.

The substance is claimed to give sexual satisfaction and pleasure to both the woman and her partner during intimacy.

However, the health ministry dismissed the claim as “false” while warning that its use can lead its user to increased risk of infections and cervical cancer, persistent irritation, burning sensation, wounds,, damage to vaginal tissues and adverse effects on pregnancy and child birth.

“Tabaa is a harmful local sex stimulant that has taken centre stage in local women’s discussions. Women insert this harmful substance into their private parts, claiming that it gives sexual satisfaction, cures vaginal infections, quickens labour, and a lot more.

“This substance is composed of a mixture of roots and leaves of trees, soda, shea butter, garlic, and other strong mint,” the ministry said.
