The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has intercepted 167 individuals in a major operation in the coastal town of Sanyang, as part of its ongoing efforts to curb irregular migration.
The group, believed to be preparing for a dangerous sea journey to Europe, was discovered at three separate locations allegedly waiting for boats to cross the Mediterranean.
This operation is part of a broader crackdown on illegal migration. Between 7 June and 10 July 2025, the GID reported intercepting a total of 382 individuals, including 31 Gambians and 323 foreign nationals.
“This operation highlights our commitment to tackling irregular migration at its source,” said Inspector Siman Lowe, Public Relations Officer for the GID, during a press briefing.
He also acknowledged the support of international partners, including the Spanish Civil Guard, in strengthening investigations and border enforcement.
“The GID’s efforts are crucial in reducing the number of young people risking their lives through unsafe routes,” he added.
Assistant Commissioner Binta K.J. Barrow also addressed the media, urging greater public cooperation and awareness about the dangers of the backway route.
