The Gambia Police have launched an investigation into an alleged case of child marriage involving a 15-year-old girl in Sare Biran village, Central River Region.

The investigation began on Thursday, 10 July 2025, following reports that the minor had been married off in violation of national laws protecting children’s rights.

According to preliminary findings, the girl’s parents, the alleged husband, a messenger who facilitated the marriage, and several witnesses from the village mosque were invited to the Soma Police Station for questioning.

The incident is being investigated under Section 24 (a), (b), and (c) of the Children’s (Amendment) Act, 2016, which explicitly prohibits child marriage and outlines penalties for anyone involved in arranging or participating in such practices.

In a statement, the Gambia Police Force strongly condemned child marriage in all forms and warned that individuals found guilty of engaging in or facilitating such acts will face the full force of the law.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to protect the rights and welfare of the victim and ensure accountability in accordance with national legislation.
