The Gambia will receive its second batch of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine in April despite reports of blood clots in some recently inoculated patients.

WHO officials are still recommending the AstraZeneca vaccine and they said the greatest threat facing countries is a lack of access to vaccines not blood clot concern.

The global health organisation is supporting the country with 20% of its recommended vaccine for developing countries – which is expected to be coming in phases.

“We are expecting to receive our second batch of the vaccine in April,” a Ministry of Health official told a town hall meeting on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Health started rolling out the AstraZeneca vaccine last week with President Adama Barrow receiving the first jab aim at dismissing conspiracy theories around the coronavirus vaccines.

The Gambia’s coronavirus infection has surpassed 5,000 cases with over 100 deaths.
