Journalism students of the University of The Gambia have demanded an end to the degrading state of their faculty with inadequate resources including poor learning environment and lack of lecturers

The students staged a protest on Thursday (15 December) to demand a stop to the situation as they lashed out at the faculty for not organising practice-based sessions throughout their four years of study.

Speaking to Gambiana, Jainaba Mbowe, an acting president of the Journalism Students Association, said they were forced to hold the protest after the school was “without a cash power for a couple of days” and “some lecturers had to cancel class because usually the school is very dark during the daytime talk-less of the evening.”

“And we all know that this is the shortest semester of the year and this has been happening that journalism students will  come without a cash power in the school.

“So, this is not the only problem we have in the School of Journalism, we also have numerious problems that are way bigger than cash power and that include a whole School of Journalism being operating for a decade without a studio,” she said.

“And also we have indadequte lecturers in the faculty. We have lecturers lecturing courses that they are not supposed to lecture and also we have lecturers that feel that their capability cannot be questioned by students because the school would not take action if they are sacked. We will not get lecturers that are going to lecture those courses. We want to put a stop to this,” she added.
