Karate instructors and students from across The Gambia and neighbouring Senegal came together over the weekend for a high-level national training course hosted by Waza United Karate Club in Yundum.

Held from 19 to 20 July, the annual event focused on refining technique and strengthening ties among West African martial artists.

Leading the course was Senegalese national team member and black belt Ibrahima Gomez, whose presence added a cross-border dimension to the training.

Organisers say the course is part of a wider effort to build regional cooperation and raise technical standards in Gambian karate.

“This training is not just about form and movement, it’s about discipline, growth, and regional unity,” Sansei Pateh Jobe, Technical Director of Waza United said.

“We focus on core principles: kata, balance, focus and the fundamentals of strength-building.”

The event drew praise from senior figures in the karate community, including Sansei Mohammed Danso, President of Shotokan Karate International (SKI), Gambia Chapter.

“This kind of collaboration is essential,” he said. “It brings clubs together, strengthens our athletes, and reminds us that martial arts are a shared discipline across borders.”

Sansei Gomez was widely commended for volunteering his time and expertise.

“His selfless contribution demonstrates the kind of leadership we need in sport,” Mr Danso added.

The course saw participation from prominent karate clubs across The Gambia, including Busumbala and Waza United, whose instructors led practical sessions and group exercises alongside their Senegalese counterparts.

Participants described the training as intense but rewarding, with a strong spirit of cooperation running throughout the weekend.

Organisers say they hope to build on the momentum by deepening ties with neighbouring countries and creating more opportunities for joint training and competition.
