A peaceful protest over the rising cost of living and electricity bills has taken place in Senegal’s capital, Dakar, with demonstrators carrying empty baskets as a symbol of household hardship.

Organised by influencer and content creator Bathie Drizzy, the march began at Castor Market and headed towards the Jet-d’Eau roundabout.

The protesters said the empty baskets represent the growing struggle many families face in affording food and other basic necessities.

The demonstration also targeted Woyofal, Senegal’s prepaid electricity system, amid concerns over the cost of electricity.

Bathie Drizzy, who has more than one million followers, called for a strong but peaceful mobilisation on social media.

The protest comes despite a 10 per cent reduction in electricity tariffs announced in January 2026 for more than 2.6 million domestic and professional customers.
