President Adama Barrow has urged African leaders to stop attributing the continent’s challenges to its colonial history and instead focus on using their knowledge and expertise to tackle present-day problems and drive development.

Speaking at the recently concluded 54th Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference in Banjul, Barrow said African leaders must move beyond historical grievances and prioritise practical solutions.

“It’s high time we look inward in Africa. That’s the only way we can move this continent forward. I call on my colleagues that we cannot now blame the colonialists. We are highly educated. I think we are prepared for the future,” he told the conference.

He emphasised the importance of collective action, describing it as “a powerful call for collaboration” and urging leaders to confront challenges “with renewed vigour and determined commitment.”

Barrow also pointed to Africa’s vast human and natural resources, urging leaders to harness them strategically for sustainable growth.

“Our continent is rich in human and natural resources and vibrant diversity. Yet, we face a complex landscape of threats, including instability, poverty, and uneven development,” he said.
