In the aftermath of the road accident that injured several members of The Gambia’s under-16 boys and girls basketball teams in Guinea, encouraging updates have emerged regarding the players’ medical conditions.
According to team officials, no player has sustained a dislocated knee, broken knee, or ankle injury — all of which are considered high-risk injuries that can prematurely end a young athlete’s basketball career.
The accident occurred on Thursday evening in Linsan, Kindia Prefecture, as the teams were travelling to Conakry to compete in the FIBA Africa U16 Zone 2 qualifiers. While no fatalities were reported, multiple players and officials sustained injuries and were transported to Kindia Regional Hospital for urgent medical attention.

Since the incident, the team has undergone three rounds of medical treatment and evaluations. Health professionals continue to monitor the injured individuals to ensure no complications arise and to determine their readiness for travel.
The Guinean Basketball Federation (FGBB), working closely with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and local health authorities, is coordinating the safe transfer of the delegation from Kindia to Conakry, where further logistical arrangements are being made for their repatriation to Banjul.

In an earlier statement, the FGBB confirmed: “Preparations are in place to transfer the injured team members safely to Conakry before their return to The Gambia. Medical teams will accompany them throughout the journey.”

The incident has drawn sympathy and support from across the basketball community, with many praising the resilience of the young players and the swift response of both Gambian and Guinean authorities.
As recovery continues, focus now shifts to ensuring the safe return of the delegation and supporting their physical and emotional well-being in the days ahead.
