Sering Modou Njie, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, has issued a stern warning to citizens against enlisting in the armed forces of Russia or Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict.
Speaking at a government press conference, Minister Njie confirmed that some Gambians have already lost their lives while involved in operations.
“We are urging our citizens to take this seriously and refrain from enlisting in such war situations,” he said, offering condolences to affected families.
He explained that many Gambians travel to Russia or Ukraine on visitor or education visas but sometimes end up joining military forces.
“This is a conflict between two warring countries,” he added, “and recruitment is happening not only in The Gambia but across Africa and other parts of the world.”
Minister Njie highlighted the dangers of participating without prior military experience.
“Enlisting in such a conflict without sufficient military background is extremely dangerous. This is not like going there to play games, this is a real war,” he cautioned, noting that recruits may be deployed to front-line combat.
The government said it will continue to educate citizens about the risks and engage with Russian and Ukrainian authorities to prevent further enlistment.
