The Independence Stadium roared back to life on Friday as The Gambia’s Scorpions returned to play in front of their home fans for the first time since 2019, marking the occasion with a 2-1 victory over Somalia in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The Scorpions had last played at the Independence Stadium in 2021, but that match was held behind closed doors due to COVID-19 protocols.

The long-awaited return of the fans added a special atmosphere to the occasion and the home side rewarded them with all three points.

The Gambia took the lead in the 18th minute after Abubakr Barry was brought down inside the box, with Ebrima Colley confidently converting from the penalty spot.

Somalia restored parity in the 71st minute through Bilal Njie Cali, a player of Gambian descent with a Gambian father and Somali mother. The striker capitalised after The Gambia failed to clear their lines from a set piece to make it 1-1.

The Scorpions responded and regained their lead in the 83rd minute. Muhammed Badamosi rose at the back post to head home Suleiman Camara’s well-delivered cross, sending the Independence Stadium into celebration.

The goal proved decisive as The Gambia held on to secure a 2-1 victory and begin their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign with three points.

For the Scorpions and their supporters, it was a memorable homecoming: competitive international football, a packed Independence Stadium, and a winning start on the road to AFCON 2027.
