Yankuba Minteh has praised The Gambia’s 2-1 victory over Somalia but insists the Scorpions must raise their level significantly if they are to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking to our reporter in the mixed zone after Friday’s victory at the Independence Stadium, the Brighton & Hove Albion winger said he was happy with the result but was not satisfied with the overall performance.

“I am happy with the result, but we have to work on a lot of things. The way we start the game wasn’t good enough.”

Yankuba Minteh, who missed the match through injury, believes the Scorpions will need to show more in their remaining qualifiers.

“I think if we want to qualify for AFCON again, this is not enough, we have to add more.”

The 20-year-old was also frank in his assessment of the opening victory, stressing that the three points are welcome but should not hide the areas that need improvement.

“I am going to be honest, I am not going to be here, yes I am happy for the victory but we have to add more.”

The Gambia will travel to face Ghana on September 29th in their next AFCON 2027 qualifier.
