The Gambia Football Federation (GFF) has confirmed that the Scorpions will face regional rivals Senegal in an international friendly on Tuesday, 31 March 2026, ending a day of controversy that followed an earlier denial attributed to Secretary General Lamin M. Jassey.

Initial remarks describing reports of the fixture as “false” triggered public debate after other officials indicated preparations were underway.

In a subsequent statement, the Federation clarified the matter, confirming that the match will take place at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio during the FIFA International Match Window.

“This match represents more than just a footballing contest; it is a celebration of the deep-rooted Senegambia brotherhood and serves to further consolidate the cordial cooperation between our two football governing bodies and nations,” the GFF said.

The fixture follows an invitation from the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) and further strengthens football ties between the neighbouring countries.

For Senegal’s Teranga Lions, the occasion will also serve as an opportunity to present their second Africa Cup of Nations trophy, won at Morocco 2025, to home supporters in what is expected to be a packed and vibrant atmosphere.

For the Scorpions, the friendly offers a crucial test against one of Africa’s heavyweights as The Gambia steps up preparations in its bid to qualify for a third AFCON appearance in 2027.

Both federations are working closely to ensure a smooth and memorable event, with supporters from both sides of the border expected to travel in large numbers.
