A delegation from the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) has briefed High Commissioner Fatou Bensouda on the country’s preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The delegation, led by GNOC Second Vice President and Chef de Mission Bakary Jammeh, alongside Executive Director Muhammed Janneh, paid a courtesy visit ahead of their departure for preparatory meetings with Commonwealth and Scottish officials.

During the meeting, the team outlined key measures being put in place to ensure Gambian athletes are fully prepared to compete at the Games, scheduled to begin on July 23, 2026.

They also emphasised the need to mobilise support from Gambians living in the United Kingdom, particularly in Scotland, to rally behind Team Gambia.

Officials noted that strong backing from the diaspora would play a crucial role in boosting the morale of athletes as they represent the country on the international stage.

They described sport as a powerful tool for promoting national unity and pride.

High Commissioner Bensouda welcomed the delegation and assured them of the High Commission’s full support, pledging to work closely with Gambian communities across the UK to create a vibrant and supportive atmosphere during the Games.

She said the mission stands ready to collaborate with stakeholders to ensure Team Gambia receives the encouragement needed to perform at its best.
As preparations continue, GNOC says it remains committed to ensuring that athletes are adequately supported both at home and abroad as they gear up to represent The Gambia at the global sporting event.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts to empower women and girls through education and skills development in The Gambia.

Preparations are continuing at pace, with authorities working closely with international partners to ensure that all arrangements meet the required standards for the successful hosting of the event.
