The governor of Central River Region has removed Mr Baboucarr Nyang from his position as Alkalo of Nyangen Village in Niani District, citing his failure to meet residency requirements stipulated under the Local Government Act.
According to an official letter dated 20 May 2026, the decision was approved by the Minister for Lands, Regional Government and Religious Affairs and took effect on 2 May 2026.
The letter stated that Mr Nyang was found to be in breach of Section 143(1)(b) of the Local Government Act 2002, which requires an Alkalo to reside in the community he or she governs.
Regional authorities said the action was taken in accordance with statutory provisions regulating local leadership and administrative conduct.
Copies of the correspondence were forwarded to several authorities, including the Head Chief of Niani District, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Lands, the Accountant General, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Kuntaur Area Council.
The document was signed on behalf of the governor by Hon. Sainey Mbye, whose official designation was not indicated in the letter.
The removal follows earlier actions by regional authorities, including the reported seizure of Mr Nyang’s official stamp amid allegations that he had delegated his responsibilities to his son.
However, the decision has sparked criticism from members of the Unite Movement for Change (UMC) and Mr Nyang’s family, who claimed the move was politically motivated.
Mr Nyang’s son and UMC supporters alleged that the Alkalo was targeted because of his son’s association with the opposition movement.
They further argued that it is common for elderly Alkalolu in The Gambia to delegate certain duties to family members or assistants.
