The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has dismissed claims circulating on social media that traffic enforcement action against Fanding Baldeh was prompted by the “No to Third Term” inscription displayed on his vehicle.

In a statement issued on Friday, the police said the action formed part of an ongoing nationwide operation targeting vehicle compliance and was solely based on traffic offences, not Mr Baldeh’s political message.

According to the GPF, officers found that Mr Baldeh’s vehicle was being driven without the required rear registration number plate and had unauthorised tinted windows without the necessary clearance.

Police said separate mandatory fines of D15,000 were issued for each of the two offences.

The GPF also stated that Mr Baldeh was unable to produce a valid driving licence during the stop and was given five days to present the document for verification.

“The enforcement measures concerned the identified motor traffic violations,” the statement said, stressing that Mr Baldeh was not stopped because of the “No to Third Term” inscription on his vehicle.

The police reiterated that they respect the lawful exercise of freedom of expression and remain committed to enforcing the law fairly and professionally, regardless of a person’s political views, affiliation or status.

The GPF urged motorists to comply with traffic regulations, adding that its vehicle compliance operation will continue to be conducted without fear, favour or discrimination.
