The Ministry of Health has expressed concern over reports of the closure of some pharmacies and drug stores across The Gambia, amid disagreements between regulatory bodies in the sector.

In a press statement, the ministry said the situation has been linked to differences between the Medicines Control Agency and the Pharmacy Council.

According to the ministry, the Medicines Control Agency is responsible for regulating medicines and related products, while the Pharmacy Council oversees the practice of pharmacy in the country.

The ministry announced that a committee has been established to investigate the matter and provide findings and recommendations aimed at reaching a lasting solution.

It added that authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will take the necessary steps to resolve the issue.

The government also revealed that draft bills proposing amendments to the Medicines and Related Products Act (2014) and the Pharmacy Council Act (2014) have been developed following extensive consultations.

Officials say the proposed legal reforms are expected to address challenges related to the management of medicines and the regulation of pharmacy practice once passed into law.

The Ministry of Health further reassured the public of its commitment to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all citizens and residents.

It said measures remain in place to safeguard access to safe and regulated medicines despite the ongoing concerns.
