Inspector General of Police (IGP) Seedy Muctarr Touray has led the promotion of 156 senior officers in a historic ceremony in Banjul, marking significant strides in gender inclusion, regional representation.
IGP Touray, addressing the ceremony, highlighted the milestone as part of his ongoing efforts to strengthen professionalism and inclusivity within the force.

“Today, 156 superior police officers have been promoted, ranging from deputy superintendent of police to assistant inspector general of police,” he said.
He emphasized the historic nature of some promotions, including the elevation of a female officer, AIG Nyassi, to the rank of assistant inspector general.
“AIG Nyassi has served both locally and internationally, heading the criminal records office and serving as regional police commissioner for Banjul before her elevation,” Touray said, describing the promotion as evidence that the wheels of reform are gaining momentum within the force.

The IGP also highlighted the Gender Promotion Initiative (GPI), conducted in collaboration with the Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance (DCAF) in 2024, which mentored 15 female officers for leadership positions.
“All 15 officers are now moving up the ranks and holding responsible offices. This shows our commitment to preparing future leaders,” he said.
He reassured that the promotions were carried out with full transparency and due process. Every officer was appraised by a promotion board comprising the GPF Senior Management Team, Human Resource Management, Administration and Finance, with oversight from the Public Service Commission.
Addressing the newly promoted officers, Touray stressed their increased responsibilities.
“Your new ranks come with additional pay but also greater duties. We are servants of the people, whose taxes fund our salaries and equipment. Our focus is to protect them from criminals and ensure national security,” he said.
Highlighting crime reduction initiatives such as intelligence-led policing, community engagement, and the Highway Patrol Unit, Touray urged officers to approach their new roles with renewed vigour.
“With your promotion, we expect renewed commitment to combating crime and maintaining the peace and stability The Gambia is known for,” he said.
