The Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) has taken a bold step to tackle environmental pollution with the launch of a multi-million Dalasi tire recycling plant at the Bakoteh Dumpsite.
Fully funded through a partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the new facility comes just five days after KMC unveiled another major recycling initiative.
The plant is set to recycle tens of thousands of abandoned tires, which are often dumped in open spaces, drains, and along roadsides, creating serious health and environmental risks.
By transforming used tires into reusable materials, KMC aims to reduce urban pollution while promoting sustainable industrial practices.
“This plant is a major milestone for the municipality,” said a KMC spokesperson. “It will not only help clean up our streets and drains but also create economic opportunities within the recycling sector.”
Residents and environmental advocates have welcomed the initiative, pointing out that abandoned tires can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and contribute to flooding during the rainy season.

The tire recycling plant is expected to mitigate these risks while improving overall urban sanitation.
The facility forms part of KMC’s broader waste management strategy, emphasizing sustainable and innovative solutions to persistent environmental challenges.
Officials say the plant will be operational at full capacity in the coming weeks and will serve as a model for other municipalities across the region.
KMC is urging residents to support the initiative by delivering used tires to designated collection points to ensure the plant operates efficiently and maximizes its environmental impact.
