Gambians have reacted to the fine handed down to killer driver Abdoulie Gaye as ‘outrageous and unjust’.

The 21-year-old driver was racing with pals last Saturday along the Senegambia Highway and lost control of his car. He ran over and killed three pedestrians.

He was convicted and fined D11,000 by Magistrate Pierette Mendy Sarr at the Kanifing Magistrate Court.

The sentence has been labelled “outrageous and unjust” by many people including the bereaved families.

Gambians took to social media to express their outrage over the lack of justice for the bereaved families.

“The justice system in this country is equivalent of a criminal organisation running their gangs the way they feel. There is no proportionality in the case looking at the magnitude of the case and the outcome of the litigation. What about the innocent lives wasted out of recklessness and ignorance  from the part of the culprit. The government emphasised and reiterates on daily basis it’s progress made in the area of security sector reform. Is this not a clear indication that you should carry out and overall reform,” said Abdou Kujabi

“This is not right… next time if a driver hit someone, people will take the law into their hands because your judgement is bull****,” Sam Junior said.

“This is not justice, probably the Judges may have some connections with the family of the Driver and gave him a light sentence while forgotten the lose of lives which can never be compensated. Someone who drives careless and reckless and killed 2 individuals should walk and roam freely again?,” Bojang Sankaranko.

“There should be more harsher punishment to discourage youth from negligence and race driving. The verdict is a cheap one,” said Chondi Hirandeh

“Gambia is a funny-land. Because of this nonsense, people take the law into their own hands. This boy will go out and drive tomorrow. Maybe, he’ll kill even more people next time,” said Hydara Hydram

“How rich is this boy’s father? How much did he pay the Police and The Judge? Or are our laws this funny and shameful. People are losing trust in our Police and Judicial System and this is a big evidence.

I am just asking Oga Polizo before we could think of support you,” Ali Wazza Sow.

“Kill three people, fine and walking the streets of Gambia, sad country we lived in,” Mo Manneh.

“Was the judge bribe? Because am worried about how he makes this conclusion for a person to kill innocent people’s  in the form of car racing,” said Abdul Cham.

“How comes he is not charged with causing death by dangerous driving???? SMH,” Yunus Bah said.

“He should go to jail not a fine…do the court or the police wanna say that we can kill and nothing will come out of it .. just have to pay a fine .. this is crazy and ppl life word more 50000,” said Mamadou Saho.
