Mamadi Kurang, former secretary of the Janneh Commission, has told a parliamentary inquiry that lead counsel Amie Bensouda sent him emails instructing a suspension of the sale of former President Yahya Jammeh’s assets, actions he says he was not authorised to follow.
Kurang revealed that while Bensouda communicated decisions to him via email and phone, he maintained that such instructions should come from the commission’s chairperson, not the lead counsel.

“When this process started, I was just a dominant observer copied into legal communications,” Kurang said.
“She (Amie Bensouda) told me on the phone, then put it in writing, that the sale should be suspended. But I could not take instruction from her, I was supposed to take instructions from the chairperson.”
He accused Bensouda of acting independently, stating:”the lead counsel was going on her own things in the name of the commission.”
The parliamentary inquiry continues as lawmakers investigate governance and authority issues surrounding the sale of Jammeh’s assets.
